Slap on your favorite feathered hat and sequined jacket – Elton John is coming to Costa Rica Feb. 3. The knighted British singer will perform here for the first time, concert promoter Evenpro announced last week. Sir Elton, best known for hits like “Tiny Dancer,” “Benny and the Jets” and “Candle in the Wind,” has sold more than 250 million records during his four-decade career. His trophy case includes six Grammy Awards, an Academy Award, a Golden Globe and a Tony Award. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994, and in 2004 was ranked No. 49 on Rolling Stone Magazine’s list of the 100 greatest artists of all time. The San José concert is confirmed on John’s official website, preceded by a performance in Lima, Peru, Feb. 1, and followed by a set of shows in Las Vegas in mid-February. The “Rocket Man” will play at Ricardo Saprissa Stadium in the northern San José district of Tibás; the concert will not take place at the National Stadium because Laura Pausini and Luis Fonsi are scheduled to perform in the stadium the previous day. Exports of the fruit totaled $743 million. Costa Rica finished 2011 as the top exporter of fresh pineapple in the world, after increasing the value of its exports by 8 percent, according to a statement from the National Chamber of Pineapple Producers (Canapep). Sales of the fruit generated a total of $743 million, including $63 million in concentrates and another $19 million in juice. Pineapple production has been criticized for alleged environmental contamination of groundwater and rivers and streams due to the use of pesticides, the Canapep statement acknowledged. Producers are being trained in best farming practices to support sustainable agriculture, the statement said. Painter and sculptor Ulises Jiménez Obregon opens his 20th
exhibition in his home province of Guanacaste.
The show is at the Hidden Garden Art Gallery and is titled
"People of Sun." The show runs through Jan. 13. In describing his
show, the artist said “My work represents the historical sense of Guanacaste:
where the sun has carved a human being, and cultural and physical
characteristics very different from the rest of the country.” Jiménez has had
over 50 collective and 35 individual exhibitions throughout Costa Rica. With
more than five shows internationally, he continues absorbing and spreading his
artistic knowledge by attending over 11 national and three international
symposiums, he reported, adding that he recently returned from a four-month
artistic journey to China and Spain. His sculptures are in private collections
throughout the world, including France, Italy, Spain, China, Israel, Germany
and Mexico, and throughout Central and South America, Canada and the United
States. Jiménez was a part of a group at the school of fine arts at the
Universidad Autónoma de Centroamérica in Heredia. Fellow sculptor Olger
Villegas Cruz said "Ulises always
showed a great disposition for art. He continues to grow in terms of design and
quality of expression, mainly thanks to a tireless fighter who only listens and
obeys the dictates of his unswerving vocation, even in what can sometimes be a
hostile environment, like sculpture art."
