Costa Rica, Playa Hermosa Guanacaste. Using your Cell Phone in Costa Rica

Hello from Playa Hermosa,

It has been a while since I have written anything worth really reading, sorry about that. Business has been really good between lots of buyers and inquiries about Costa Rica and taking a trip to Las Vegas for the Re/Max International convention, where I had the hone of being a guest speaker and a seminar about Going Global with your Business, which leads me into this blog post.

Many and I mean many people that come to Costa Rica always ask “does my smart phone or cell phone work in Costa Rica”. Well the answer is YES and NO. The only carrier that I know of from North America that has reciprocal plan is AT&T. the other carriers, if you call them will say yes, but they leave out a lot of the information you need to activate your phone when you are here and then they are stuck and frustrated. I know this happened to one of my friends that came to visit

Even with AT&T you have to call them and tell them that you are coming to CR and have them activate the service for you. Then your smart phone will work. But be careful how you use it as it could cost you a small fortune, especially if you use the roaming data for emails and you will be shocked when you get your next cell bill. I have experienced the same thing in the opposite direction.

My first trip back to the US as an owner of an I Phone 4, I had contacted the local phone company, ICE Kolbi, here in Costa Rica to activate international roaming for my trip. I had to put a $150.00 deposit down first before they would do it. I understand why, but my god 150 bucks.

Anyway I traveled to the states and did not think about the data roaming and when I got back to CR and paid my cell phone bill, I had the proverbial, heart attack as my roaming bill was almost $600.00. I had to look at it twice; I even called to say this has got to be a mistake. Well they sent me a detailed report and low and behold, it was there, all true, every call and every email I sent. AT&T raped me like they do to their own clients. Boy I am glad I live in Costa Rica. My normal cell bill is bout eighty bucks a month with unlimited data and my international call are like $0.07 per minute. Now that is CHEAP!!!

So I did some investigating for myself, and for my friends and clients that come to Costa Rica. I found a web site that is based out of the US that is an authorized dealer for ICE Kolbi, and you can order a prepaid SIM chip for your smart phone and have it mailed to you before you leave for your trip.

I sent the link to a client of mine that was coming down and asked them if I could purchase one of these SIM cards and have it sent to him to try when he was here. I told him I would pay for the chip and he could use it till he used up the time.

He and I were blown away by the quality of the call made and the data he was getting for only $9.00 for 15 days of data unlimited data, the phone calls were Cheap, are you ready? $4 or 2,000 colones got him approx. 60 local minutes of call time and, 15 minutes of long distance to US/CAN

Now the hitch behind the deal, your phone needs to be a 4 band unlocked phone. Check with you service provider to see if your phone meets this requirement. You can also check by taking the model number and doing an internet search and it will tell you if it is or is not Most Cell companies that give you a free phone with a plan, say Verizon or Sprint, if the phone has the name of the service provider stamped on the phone, most likely this phone is not a unblocked phone.

So here is the link to the web page https://www.costaricacellularconnection.com/

I hope this helps you when you are planning your trip. I recommend that if you are going to go this route, you purchase the chip well in advance of trip to Costa Rica so you have it in time. Also just to put some of the skeptics mind at ease, I get absolutely nothing from this company for promoting it, just doing this to help those that want to come to Costa Rica and still be connected using their cell phone.

As always, thanks to my steady followers for stopping by my blog.
