Costa Rica Joins Pacific Alliance Trade Bloc

As of Thursday (May 23, 2013) Costa Rica has received its approval to join the Pacific Alliance trade bloc that includes Chile, Colombia, Peru and Mexico. Costa Rica was voted in by all of the Pacific Alliance members, who in total represent 36 percent of Latin Americas gross domestic product.

The big question is how will this effect Costa Rica, and while the totality of the joining the trade bloc will not be fully know for some time, there are a couple of things that we do know as of now. With the Alliances goal “to drop barriers on labor, finance and trade”, they have already agreed to drop tariffs on 90 percent of all goods.

We can only hope that these decrease in import taxes will eventually trickle down to the consumes, being that the current tariffs have lead to inflated prices on almost all products not produces in Costa Rica.

The second major impact of the Alliance is going to be its effect on the Visa system between the Pacific Alliance member countries.  The goal is to create a common Visa that will open the tour for travel and tourism between the countries. Peru has even agreed to lift business visa requirement for the Alliance members also.

Up Date: As of the May 25 Canada has announced that it is not ready to join the Pacific Trade Alliance , but is keeping the conversation open for next year’s meetings.

What are your thoughts on Costa Rica Joining the Pacific Alliance?
