Nicaragua Oks Mega Canal that will Dwarf Panama

Lawmakers in Nicaragua have approved an estimated 40 billion dollar plan to build a canal connecting the Pacific and Atlantic oceans. The project would be built in conjunction with and Chinese firm would stretch over 130 miles and would “dwarf the Panama canal”.

Estimates are that once completed the canal could capture 4.5 percent of global maritime freight traffic and possible double the per-capita GDP of Nicaragua as a whole. Along with the canal, the plan would include airports, an oil pipeline, railway and two free-trade-zones.

As of now the project still has many hurtles to clear before it comes to fruition, but the initial steps are in motion.

Costa Rica officials have endorsed the idea of a transoceanic canal in Nicaragua as long as no national territories are affected by the project.

We will keep you updated on any key developments in the future.
