Mothers’ Day in Costa Rica
Well today being August 15, here in Costa It is the official Dia de madre, or mothers’ day. Unlike in the US where it always falls on a Sunday in May, here in Costa Rica no matter what day of the week the 15th of August is it is Mother’s day. The tico take great pride and show tons of respect for their mothrs, as should be everywhere in the world, but here it turns into a national holiday as well. All the government offices are closed along with banks, hardware stores and many other service providers, so don’t think you can go to the cable company to pick up that new HD box for your new service. Many Ticos will spend the day lavishing simple gifts upon Mama, and usually there is a very nice feast prepared by the daughters and granddaughters. The family is a very strong component of Costa Rica life as many generation of family will live together in the same house even with the addition of say a son-in law or daughter-in law. Some families like to do just as they do in North America and treat Mom to nice dinner or lunch out a better than usual visited restaurant. Many of the store will feature ads for special deals for gift for mama. I was in the local grocery store yesterday and there was a big disply set up of items to purchase for Mom, I personally am not sure if some of thses would fly in te US, as they had new pots and pan sets, rice cookers, irons, and blenders and a lot of house hold items. Personally if I was a mom, and thank God I am not as I could never hold a torch to be as good as my mom is to me, I would be a bit ticked off if my kids gave me a new set of pots and pans, that kind of says, “Mom I love your cooking so I am giving you new tools to feed me more and better items” or “Happy Mothers’ day Mom, here is new iron, can you put a better crease in my shirt”. All joking aside, I have seen many younger Ticos today walking back home with very ice bouquets of flowers to show their appreciation. So to all the Mothers’ or Moms’ or Mommies’ how ever your children call you, out there and that may read this blog, no matter what day is it were you live and when you read this, I send you hugs and love for a wonder and joy filled Dia de Madre! And Just a Special thanks to my Mon for all she has sacrificed and done for me over the years. I love you Mom !!! As always, thanks to my steady followers for stopping by my blog.
