Welcome to Playa Hermosa

Just 25 minutes from the Daniel Oduber International airport (LIR) is the quiet, low-density beach town of Playa Hermosa–one of the closest beaches from LIR international airport. It’s a short and comfortable drive on good roads.

Playa Hermosa is a peaceful community offering a high-quality lifestyle with a great mix of North & South Americans, Europeans and Ticos (Costa Ricans). On the hills and off the major roads, you will find beautiful luxury homes and condos, along with some small hotels.

The weather in Playa Hermosa is always warm and - although it is in the tropics - the Playa Hermosa area gets less rainfall than any other place in the country.

Hermosa is a great place for retirement, vacation or investment with homes and condos starting in the low $100,000’s range running up to as high as several million dollars.

Be sure to read my page about retirement in Costa Rica.

The Beach

The beach is not white or black sand, it is a cinnamon beach with a salt and pepper look. The rich volcanic soil gives it a darker hue. There are no riptides or undercurrents and swimming is safe & easy for all ages.

The words "Playa Hermosa" translate to "beautiful beach", and it lives up to it's name as you will see when you come down for a visit.  You can expect small and soft waves-not like other nearby surfing beaches where you can expect stronger currents and rocky outbreaks.

Playa Hermosa prides itself on being a certified Blue Flag or "Bandera Azul" beach. To achieve Bandera Azul status requires strict adherence to environmental standards for cleanliness, water purity and waste removal. This program is similar to the original program founded in Spain and utilizes similar criteria for beach safety and sanitation.

Things to do

In Playa Hermosa you can find a variety of hotels, restaurants, barsvacation rentals, and shopping.  You will also find many sports and leisure activities to enjoy.  Take some surfing lessons or just rent a board if you are already an experienced surfer.  Try your hand at some offshore fishing or take in a movie at the local theater.  Work out in a local gym or have some fun playing miniature golf.  Get a relaxing beachside massage in front of the El Velero Hotel or just have a cold beer and watch the waves lap on the shore.

If food is what you love you'll find a great variety of restaurants to choose from, both gourmet and fast food types. The usual pizza, burgers and traditional local cuisine are complimented by gourmet options such as the award winning Ginger restaurant, which has Asian-Inspired Tapas in a modern treehouse setting. Just a few minutes drive away in Playas del Coco you will find even more options that cover the full spectrum of cuisines from around the world.  Be sure to check out my area restaurant guide for more information.

There are also a number of fun sports bars and hangouts popular with locals and tourists alike.  Be sure to check out the Aquasport Bar & Restaurant in Playa Hermosa and Coconutz Bar in Playas del Coco.

For example, the community is bordered on the south side by
